What to expect from the 7 Days desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga

Welcome to Marrakech Airport! We hope your flight was pleasant. You will be greeted by an IMT driver-guide who will welcome you to the city and safely escort you to your hotel. Here, you can relax and rest. Overnight at a hotel in Marrakech.

Marrakech is the second oldest imperial city, known as the pearl of the south. We will pick you up from your hotel/riad to begin the historical tour of Marrakech, which includes the Bahia Palace, the Badi Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the famous main square Djemaa El Fna with its surrounding souks and artisan quarters, the Koutoubia Minaret, and the local Souk market. After the tour, we head to Ouarzazate, an ancient caravan city on the silk and salt route at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Ouarzazate is known as the Gateway to the Sahara.

We will travel through the dramatic landscapes of the High Atlas Mountains, passing through the Berber town of Taddert and crossing the Tizi n Tichka Pass, standing at 2,260 meters. We will stop at the famous Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most fascinating red-earth castles along the ancient Kasbah road. We continue our journey to Ouarzazate, where you can visit the Atlas Film Studios before checking into your accommodation. Overnight in Ouarzazate.

After breakfast at your riad, we head to the beautiful Skoura Oasis, where you will see all the kasbahs nestled among the palm trees. Returning to the main road, we continue through the Valley of the Roses. At the village of Kelaa Mgouna, we stop for Berber tea and refreshments. This town is famous for its Persian pink roses and celebrates the harvest each year with the joyful and fragrant Rose Festival, locally known as Fête des Roses.

We continue the tour along the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through the red Atlas Mountains, Berber villages, and green valleys with palm groves toward Tinghir and the Todra Gorge. Admire the panoramic views of ancient mud-brick Berber villages overlooking the valley. Reach the gorge and walk beneath the 300-meter-high red cliffs, a popular spot for rock climbers.

We continue our journey to Erfoud and then to the village of Merzouga, where your camel awaits. You will mount your camel, guided by an experienced camel driver, to explore the mysterious sand sea of Erg Chebbi. This evening trek will take you into the desert for about an hour. We will spend the night in a well-equipped camp in the middle of the Sahara. This is a great opportunity to capture beautiful photos of the sunset and sunrise. When we arrive at the camp, we will walk to the high dunes to watch the sunset. It will be a magical night under a clear sky filled with stars. Enjoy a wonderful dinner around the campfire and spend the night in a luxury tent.

After visiting the village and oasis of Merzouga, you will meet the Gnawa people, originally slaves brought from Sudan, to experience their music and lifestyle. We continue to see the panoramic views behind Erg Chebbi, where the sand dunes change color with the sunlight. Stop at the village of Mordani, an old ruined village, and M’fis, a place where coal was mined and where most of Merzouga’s population once worked for a living.

This is a fascinating day spent among or near the dunes, the highest in Morocco. After visiting the village of Mirdani, we head to the nomadic families in their tents in Kem Kem. After sharing tea with them, we return to your riad. Overnight in Merzouga.

After an early wake-up to admire the sunrise and a camel ride (or jeep ride) back to the village of Merzouga, you will meet your driver and prepare for another day full of visits and adventures.
We cross the volcanic massifs of the northeastern end of the Anti-Atlas to the village of Nkob. Here begins the journey along the legendary Draa Valley, passing through several brick villages scattered along the valley. In the afternoon, we arrive at Agdz, which in Berber means “place of rest,” as it was a stopping point for ancient camel caravans crossing the Sahara Desert from Marrakech to Timbuktu. From here, we head to Ouarzazate and spend the night. Overnight in Ouarzazate.

We travel through the Ounila Valley to the Kasbah of Telouet, a ruined kasbah that was once an important stop for traders. Explore the kasbah and, after lunch, head back through the Tizi n Tichka Pass to Marrakech, where you will spend the night. Overnight in Marrakech.

After breakfast, we will accompany you to Marrakech Airport, marking the end of your 7-day expedition. (Please arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight, so departure will be arranged accordingly.) If time permits, you will have some free time in the morning to explore Marrakech on your own. End of our services.
